Luke was raised with a strong ethic of service to others; he has enjoyed helping people thrive in adverse circumstances since childhood. His earliest memory of a career goal was to become "a paramedic on the moon." While life temporarily delayed his entry into the medical field, he studied journalism and literature at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While at CU, Luke discovered the Tao Te Ching, Tai Chi Chuan and Taoism, and became instantly enthralled with this ancient philosophy and practice. Luke came to understand that western science and eastern thought are not two separate phenomena, but two interconnected, complementary views of the world, and that both are at their best when unified and whole. His journey to discover ever deeper levels of wholeness drove him to study biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and nutrition as a premedical undergraduate. Instead of choosing to go to medical school, he chose to study chiropractic, and excelled at anatomy, physiology, embryology, and biomechanics.
After moving to Southern California in 2003, Luke transferred from chiropractic to acupuncture in order to reflect his great passion and love for Eastern though and science. He began practicing as an intern at Southern California University of Health Sciences in 2004, later transferring to Emperor's College in Santa Monica, CA. While completing his Master's degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine (2008) at Emperor's College, he also practiced nutrition, herbology, and functional medicine with some of southern California's most respected holistic MDs. By practicing alongside board-certified endocrinologists, family practitioners, and well-known integrative and holistic Medical Doctors, Luke saw the value of integrative medicine in its ability to assess and treat clients effectively and holistically, using science and art in a synergistic and deeply humanistic environment.
As an intern at Emperor's College, he also saw and practiced integrative medicine, providing acupunture services at Venice Family Clinic, the largest integrative medical clinic of its kind in the US. He also interned under Raymond Rubio, DAOM, L.Ac, an internationally recognized leader in fertility medicine and founder of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Rubio performs acupuncture during In Vitro Fertilization procedures, increasing IVF success by more than 80%.
Drawing on his early training as a journalist and writer, Luke began writing articles for a national natural health news websites, including naturalnews.com, one of the most respected sources on the web. Later he wrote more than 30 articles for Lance Armstrong's health website, livestrong.com. He continues to write articles & provide content in the health & wellness field.
Luke returned to Colorado in spring of 2008 to start a practice after completing his Master's degree and the national board certification exam for acupuncture. He joined Sacred Tree in late 2008 after meeting Brigette Schabdach & Joel Proctor, MS, L.Ac., and finding a deep resonance with their ethics and ideals of practice that form the foundation for Sacred Tree, fulfilling a lifelong dream to live and practice in a mountain community.
